12-04-2008:
The
final round of the Australian Supermotard Championship saw the teams
travel to the country town of Northam WA, approx 80kms east of Perth.
The event was held as part of the annual Northam Motorcycle Festival
and attracted 115 entries across all classes and a huge crowd of approx
10,000 spectators during the two days.
There was a great deal of tension and anticipation as the S1 combatants lined up for the last race of the year and the one that would decide the overall Australian Supermoto champion for 2008. After gaining the holeshot off the start and leading around the first lap, KTM's Reekie was under extreme pressure from Aprilia's McFarlane. As they entered Turn 1 on the second lap, Reekie made a rare mistake and McFarlane pounced on the opportunity and passed to take the lead. He then put his head down and posted some of the fastest laps of the weekend to hold out a fast-finishing Reekie to take the chequered flag in race 4. The final word going to Aprilia SXV Racing's Josh McFarlane to thunderous applause from the huge crowd who knew they had just witnessed one of the best races of the entire series.
After the race McFarlane said, "It was fantastic to win the last race even though it wasn't enough to win the Championship". "I'd like to thank Aprilia Australia for their support throughout the year and a special thanks to Ben Tompsett for all his hard work in making sure I had every opportunity to get a result."
